Description

A biomaterial is a synthetic or natural material that interfaces with biological or living tissues and elicits an appropriate host/ material response. The division of Biomaterials Science encompasses the study of all such materials that may be employed in the various disciplines of dentistry. The aim is to equip the future dental practitioner with the necessary background information to enable him correctly select and apply the best material for each case. The subject introduces the scientific principles behind the structure and properties of the materials, of which there are four categories: polymers, metals, ceramics and composites; thereafter, the commonly available materials in each category are studied in detail.

Dental Biomaterials Science is a dynamic field that revolves around the search for the ideal dental biomaterial, necessitating continuous improvement of the pre-existing ones. The subject is taught via both lectures as well as practical sessions.

Career Opportunities Currently, there are only 4 Dental Biomaterials Scientists in the country. Employment opportunities exist within the major hospitals and dental schools. Furthermore, specialists may work in industries to develop new dental materials.
